We stayed at 85 Smith Street in Brooklyn, it was a pleasant surprise that this Michelin 1-star restaurant was only a stone-throw away at 140 Smith Street.
Saul's website wasn't impressive at all, compared to other star restaurants' websites. But don't be fooled by it, it's an exciting eatery.
We had tried the 7-course tasting menu for $85.
Ceviche of local Albacore Tuna
Chilled Green Gazpacho
Grilled Spanish Octopus
Sauteed Striped Bass
Warm Hudson Valley Foie Gras
Pan Roasted Breast of Squab
Valrhona Caribe Warm Chocolate Cake
Basked Alaska
Very good atmosphere. Not a big place, modern deco, easy to talk. Service was average.
A couple highlights in dishes. The chilled green Gazpacho was so good. The perfectly made tomato Sorbet complimented very well this Spanish soup with green tomato base. I wished I could have more. Baked Alaska had a chocolate cookie as the base, ice-cream inside, and meringue outside. Very unique and tasty.
An episode took place when the bass plates were served. My wife had noticed the odd color of the fish when she cut through (even under the dim light), and it wasn't tasting right. We had guessed it must have been a not-so-fresh piece of bass. Interestingly, mine was good. The waiter took it back and the kitchen had sent a brand new plate which turned out to be ok.
Brooklyn wasn't my type of neighborhood. Running an upscale restaurant wouldn't be easy as I can imagine. Saul was casual, with a bar in the dining room, and served American cuisine with Spanish touch. It was probably right how Saul had positioned itself. The food was overall pleasant and creative. There were a couple very good dishes as we had learned from this tasting. I would go back.
